Adapated from his own book "Mahal lo kokila".

What makes the movie so good is Vamsy's direction. The way he captured the beauty of Godavari, the way he tried to reflect Bhanupriya's feelings through her eyes, make the movie a poem on celluloid. The most valuable asset of the movie is its music. Each one of them being a real gem, thanks to Ilayaraja. But, the climax particularly is unconvincing in an otherwise impressive film.

Sitaara won the national award for best regional film in 1984. National award for best female singer was given to S.Janaki for the song 'vennello godari andham..'.
Sitaara is Bhanupriya's first movie in Telugu, she did act in a movie called "chadarangam", before this, but this was her first release.

In one of his rare interviews, Vamsy said :
"No one (there were Sri K.Vishwanath, S.P.Balasubranayam and Gummadi among others) was really impressed with the movie when the first positive print was shown. Producer Edida Nageshwara Rao garu was disappointed too. I went to Illayaraja and requested him to complete the re- recording. After watching the entire movie Raja assured me saying I really made a very good movie, and it would surely fetch me name and fame. After the re-recording was done, everyone who initially dissuaded me was full of praise. And it's all because of Ilayaraja's excellent background score".
